Wool versus Goosedown!

Insulation is not the only thing you need to ensure a good night's sleep.  What your body wants is to remain at a stable temperature (Homeostasis). So, what’s the problem?

  • Goose down is an excellent insulator as it traps a lot of air [Still air is the best insulator we have. Think of a thermos flask]
  • Goose down does not breathe very well. The insulating power means that it is difficult for moisture to escape.
  • Trapped moisture leads to high humidity under your duvet. This makes you restless and reduces the quality of your sleep.
  • Wool is a good insulator and absorbs moisture very quickly yet does not feel damp in any way until it has absorbed more than a third of its weight in water.
  • Down or feather (which is even worse than down) can not react as quickly or to the same level. This means the humidity under a down or feather quilt is higher than when sleeping under wool.

This is one of the reasons that geese float but sheep don’t.

  • Also the more feather and the less down, the poorer the insulation and the stuffier it becomes.
  • Especially if you sleep with a partner you will both have slightly different metabolisms which mean your bodies will need to loose heat at different rates.
  • Wool easily accommodates these differences buffering you both from the environment while maintaining your individual comfort to promote restful sleep
