All of us at Woolroom are proud to be supporting our very own Scott Griffin as he runs 7 marathons in 7 days. Scott is taking on his week-long challenge to raise money for Dyspraxia UK and awareness about this disability.
So what is dyspraxia?
“Dyspraxia is a surprisingly common condition affecting movement and coordination in children and adults. Dyspraxia affects all areas of life, making it difficult for people to carry out activities that others take for granted. Signs of dyspraxia/DCD are present from a young age but may not be recognised until a child starts school – or even later in adulthood.” - Dyspraxia UK
We spoke to Scott to find out why dyspraxia is an issue close to his heart as well as his 7 reasons to keep him going through 7 marathons.
“I have dyspraxia myself and if I can raise better awareness of the disability then my hope is that over time there will be a better understanding of dyspraxia.
I started realising that I was really enjoying running in secondary school when we used to do cross country. I used to look forward to it where as others didn’t. I went on to represent my secondary school at Grantham Athletics club. My first competitive race was the Peterborough 5k fun run where I finished 42nd out of over 1000 runners. I then finished second in the Lincolnshire county championships over 5k.
My first attempt at a marathon was the Nottingham Christmas marathon where I also raised money and awareness about dyspraxia and the charity. I have completed a 100k event “A race to the king” in 21 hours and 51 minutes.
In preparation for this upcoming challenge I have done two marathons in two days in January at Milton Keynes and a 6 hour running event in February at Coalville.”
Here are my 7 reasons for taking on this challenge;
1) Most importantly to raise awareness of the dyspraxia foundation and the disability dyspraxia itself.
2) To encourage others with dyspraxia to try running
3) Running has been a passion of mine since secondary school
4) As I didn’t quite manage all 7 last time I am doing this for self-achievement.
5) To prove that anything is possible
6) Running is a great way to support my mental health
7) To have fun and enjoy myself.
