Perched high in the lush hills of Powys, Red House Farm is more than a working sheep farm - it’s a testament to Welsh farming heritage and a new chapter in sustainable wool production. Run by Husband and Wife duo Huw and Sioned, and their son Dafydd, this family-run farm is one of the proud hero farms behind Woolroom’s Wool ID® traceability programme.

A Family Rooted in the Land

Farming runs deep in the family’s story. Huw has farmed all his life, while Sioned joined him on the land after they married in 1996. Their son Dafydd has followed the same path, working full-time on the farm apart from two formative years at agricultural college.

Their hands-on dedication shows in every field and flock, from the lowland meadows to the windswept hilltops. At the highest point of the farm – 930 feet above sea level – we captured sweeping views, showcasing the landscape that nurtures the sheep behind our Deluxe wool bedding collection.

Why Texel & Beltex Wool Shines in Bedding

The farm’s 1,000 Texel cross ewes and 80 pedigree Beltex sheep provide a unique combination of wool qualities perfect for sleep:

  • Texel Cross: prized for its springy loft and natural bounce, giving our duvets and pillows lasting fullness.
  • Beltex: known for fine, soft fibres that enhance the smoothness and comfort of our bedding.

Blended together, these fibres deliver a balance of loft, breathability, and durability – all hallmarks of our Deluxe Washable collection of duvets, pillows, mattress protectors and toppers.

Farming for the Future

While rooted in tradition, the Owen family are embracing progressive land-care practices. This year they introduced Herbal Leys, a diverse pasture mix encouraged by the Welsh Government for its deep-rooted plants that improve soil health, water retention, and biodiversity.

The results are already promising: healthier grazing for the sheep and richer soil that will continue to benefit the land for years to come.

Life on the Farm

Red House Farm’s calendar follows the natural rhythm of the flock:

  • Spring: Lambing season brings long days (and nights) caring for new arrivals.
  • Summer: Shearing begins, keeping sheep cooler and gathering the year’s precious fleece.
  • Autumn/Winter: Breeding season demands careful planning to ensure strong flocks for the following spring.

Once shorn, the wool embarks on its Wool ID® journey – fully traceable from the rolling hills of Powys to the depot where it's sorted and graded to our best-in-class manufacturing facility to its final resting place: the bedding on your bed.

A Warm Welsh Welcome

Hospitality seems to come as naturally to the Owen family as farming itself. Between photo shoots and filming on the hillside, we were treated to stories, laughter, and hearty Welsh warmth – proof that their care extends well beyond their animals and fields.

The family are clearly as keen as Woolroom to change the value of wool, a fibre so miraculous, yet often overlooked and couldn’t do enough for us to ensure that we were able to capture life on the farm in the most authentic way possible.

Looking Ahead

With Dafydd poised to carry the family’s legacy forward, Red House Farm is balancing heritage, innovation, and sustainability – values that echo Woolroom’s own mission.

As we left the farm, the hills glowing gold behind the flock, it was clear that Huw, Sioned and Dafydd’s dedication is helping us all sleep a little better – naturally, responsibly, and traceably.
