Wool duvets naturally regulate temperature, resist dust mites and create the ideal sleep climate for couples. Unlike pure goose down or feather and down-filled bedding, wool is breathable, allergy-friendly and cruelty-free too. Wool wins on every front. Want to know why customers are switching? Read on.

Choosing the right duvet can make all the difference to your sleep quality, and for many, the decision comes down to wool, goose down or a feather and down blend. While down has long been associated with luxury, more and more people are discovering that wool offers a naturally superior sleep experience.

So, why is a wool duvet better than a goose down duvet, or one filled with a blend of feathers and down? Let’s break it down.

Wool vs Goose Down vs Feather and Down: A Quick Comparison

Feature

Wool Duvet

Goose Down Duvet

Feather and Down Duvet

Temperature Regulation

Excellent — naturally thermoregulating

Poor — can trap heat and cause overheating

Poor — higher feather content traps heat and can create uneven warmth or ‘hot spots’

Moisture Wicking

Absorbs and releases moisture

Traps moisture, leading to a clammy feel

Feathers hold onto sweat and humidity, which can lead to odours over time

Hypoallergenic

Naturally resistant to dust mites, mould, and mildew

Often attracts allergens unless chemically treated

Quills and dust can harbour allergens and may require more intensive cleaning

Sustainability

Renewable, biodegradable, cruelty-free

Often involves live plucking or intensive farming

Often a by-product of intensive farming and can be difficult to trace

Weight & Loft

Heavier feel, comforting weight

Very light and fluffy, with high loft

Heavier than pure down; prone to flattening and requires regular fluffing

Maintenance

Machine washable (when encased properly)

Often requires professional cleaning to maintain loft

Requires care to prevent quills from damaging the casing

Why Wool Is the Smarter Sleep Choice

  1. Naturally Regulates Body Temperature

Unlike goose down and feather and down fillings, which act as insulators by trapping heat, wool adapts to your body’s temperature throughout the night. That means it keeps you warm in winter and cool in summer, ideal for hot sleepers, couples sleeping at different temperatures, and people prone to night sweats or temperature fluctuations.

  1. Wicks Away Moisture

Wool can absorb up to 30% of its own weight in moisture without feeling damp. That means it pulls excess sweat away from your body and releases it into the air — no more waking up sticky or clammy.

Down, by contrast, can trap moisture inside the filling, reducing comfort and leading to odour or mould over time. While goose down traps humidity, a feather-heavy duvet can hold onto it even longer, leading to a more humid, uncomfortable sleep environment.

  1. Hypoallergenic and Cleaner Sleep

Wool is naturally resistant to dust mites, mould spores, and bacteria, making it a better choice for allergy sufferers and those with asthma or eczema. Feather and down, unless specially treated, are prone to harbouring allergens. Woolroom is also the only natural bedding brand to receive the Allergy UK Seal of Approval.

  1. Ethical and Sustainable

Wool is a renewable, biodegradable fibre that’s sheared from sheep with no harm done. At Woolroom, we only use traceable British wool from farms committed to high standards of animal welfare. Our Wool ID® programme makes it easy to trace the wool that fills your duvet right back to the farm it came from.

Goose down and feathers, on the other hand, often come with ethical concerns, including live plucking or by-products of industrial farming practices. Even responsibly sourced down or feathers can be difficult to trace.

  1. Balanced Weight and Comfort

Some people prefer the floaty lightness of down, but many find that wool’s slightly weightier feel provides a sense of comfort and security, without overheating. Wool duvets also drape better over your body, reducing cold spots and draughts.

The Verdict: Why Wool Wins

Goose down and feather and down duvets might seem luxurious, but wool is the better performer when it comes to real sleep benefits:

  • Keeps you at the right temperature all night
  • Helps with moisture control and breathability
  • Naturally hypoallergenic
  • Ethically and sustainably sourced
  • Durable and easy to care for

Frequently asked questions

Is a wool duvet better than a feather duvet or quilt?

Yes. While a feather duvet or quilt might be a traditional choice, it lacks the active temperature regulation of wool. Feathers contain a rigid quill that adds weight and can trap heat, whereas wool is a natural insulator that breathes, helping you avoid waking up overheated or clammy.

Are down quilts warmer than wool?

Down quilts can feel warmer at first because they hold onto body heat. Wool responds to your temperature instead, keeping you warm when needed while preventing overheating — which makes it more comfortable over the course of the night.

Is a feather duvet heavier than a goose down duvet?

Yes. Feathers have a rigid quill and are much denser than down clusters. This means a feather and down blend will feel significantly heavier and flatter than a goose down duvet. If you enjoy the sensation of weight but want the breathability that feathers lack, wool provides the perfect ‘comforting weight’ without the risk of night sweats.

My wool duvet is the best duvet I have ever bought. I sleep so much better and although it’s not a big thick duvet, it keeps my body temperature cool but not hot. Love it and it’s the best duvet I have ever bought. Can highly recommend buying from wool room. Customer service is excellent too
