Nestled in the rolling hills of the Scottish Borders, the farm at Abbey St Bathans is more than just a sheep farm—it’s a place where history, innovation, and sustainability come together. Owned and operated by James, Joy and Gillon Dobie, the farm is a beacon of modern farming excellence with roots that stretch back centuries.
As I approached the farm, the views took my breath away. The valley spread out below in a patchwork of lush greens, with sheep grazing peacefully in the fields. It’s hard to believe that this quiet corner of Scotland has seen so much history.
A Legacy Written in the Land
For James Dobie the land holds deep personal significance. The land he farms has been passed down through the generations by inheritance since 1768. Remarkably there are records that date back to 1172, when a Cistercian Priory was established here. The land has only ever had two owners, adding a layer of historical richness to this wonderful farm.
A Sustainable Vision
Joy and James’s passion for farming is matched by their commitment to sustainability, driven by their Son, Gillon, who is set to take over the farm in coming years. Their dedication is evident in the steps they’ve taken to make the farm carbon-negative—a rare achievement in the agricultural world. “It’s been years since we ploughed the land,” Joy explained, pointing out the environmental benefits of this practice, which reduces carbon emissions and protects soil health.
Renewable energy is a cornerstone of their approach. A wind turbine, solar panels, and a district heating system work together to power not only the farm but also nine neighbouring homes. Excess energy is fed back into the grid, making the farm an integral part of the local energy ecosystem. Electric vehicles, charged using their renewable power supply, and farm machinery further demonstrate their innovative, forward-thinking approach.
Life on the Farm
With roughly 2,500 Suffolk cross ewes to care for, their days are as busy as they are fulfilling, constantly changing as they move through the seasons throughout the year.
Their year could arguably start in Spring with the arrival of new lambs. Working around the clock they tend to the new additions as the farm buzzes with new life. Shearing then begins in the summer when the sheep's fleece is at its heaviest, helping to keep the sheep cooler in the summer months and free from blowflies. Autumn into Winter is breeding (tupping) season, this requires close attention in order to plan when each ewe will be expected in the Spring! Next job is to keep the ewes in good health and monitored throughout their pregnancies.
Once shorn the wool from the Dobie farm enters the Woolroom’s unique Wool ID journey. We handpick this wool for our Deluxe Washable Collection, choosing fibers from Suffolk cross sheep to provide our bedding with the ideal combination of loft, comfort, and durability.
The warmth and hospitality from James and Joy was evident in every interaction—from the many cups of tea, hot Ribena, homemade soup AND homemade bread provided throughout the day to the easy laughter and flowing conversation.
Looking Ahead
The Dobies aren’t content to rest on their laurels. With big plans for the future, they’re determined to push the boundaries of what a modern, sustainable farm can achieve. "Sustainability is incredibly important to us on the farm, their Son, and eventual successor explained.
As I left Abbey St Bathans, I couldn’t help but feel inspired. Joy and James have created something truly special—a farm that honours its past, thrives in the present, and looks boldly to the future.
Their story is a testament to the power of passion, innovation, and connection to the land. It’s a reminder that even in a fast-changing world, some things—like the beauty of the Scottish countryside and the dedication of the people who care for it—remain timeless.
