Tell us about your farm?
The home farm is Llanfechan which is where we are today and the second farm is about 15 miles away. I go between both the farms regularly, helping out where I can. My Father, Mother and Brother and all trade collectively as G Davies & Co, so proper family business!
And how long have you and your family have been farming?
My Great-Grandfather started farming here sometime in the 1940’s and my Father took over the farm in the 70’s when he married my Mother. So since then it’s been a family run farm. My brother, Kevin has been farming since he left school and I have been full time farming for the last 3 years when we decided to purchase a second farm.
How many sheep do you have and what breeds do you keep?
Too many! We currently have 2,500 ewes mainly pure breed Beulah Speckled Face with about 680 crossed with the Bluefaced Leicester to produce Welsh mules. We also have some Brecknock Cheviot ewes which are bred pure and small flocks of Suffolks and Bluefaced Leicester which we keep to Breed rams. The wool from a Bluefaced Leicester is fairly fine and dense, with the ideal staple length for adding into mattresses. Just the right amount of crimp and spring.
