Machine Washable Wool Bedding: The Science

It has taken us 10 years to perfect our machine washable bedding to make sure it doesn’t lose any of its Woolroom quality.

Ordinarily, when you wash wool the moisture, heat and movement in the machine will cause it to felt, due to the structure of its natural fibres. The end result means that the fabric loses many of the natural qualities of wool. But what’s the solution? It’s impossible to create machine washable wool bedding without treating it in some way – so we’ve chosen to use biodegradable cleaning detergents that are eco-friendly.

The process we use for all our machine washable duvets doesn’t detract from the wool fibres in any way – they will still work as they naturally should do, meaning none of the benefits of wool are lost. In fact, it is thought that cleaning up the fibres in this way can actually enhance your washable wool duvets ability to thermo-regulate and absorb moisture.

Hypoallergenic, Washable Wool Duvets, Pillows And More

We regularly shout out about the fact that wool is naturally hypoallergenic, making it perfect for asthma and allergy sufferers. But what do the treatments that make wool washable mean for your skin? Well, don’t worry, we’ve thought of that too! The biodegradable chemicals used in our washable wool process are double washed out of the fibre to make sure that there is no remaining residue.

So, we can confidently say that our machine washable bedding bundles are hypoallergenic and free from all chemicals. And this has been recognised by Oeko-Tex with its highest standard global certification, meaning our washable bedding products have tested free from harmful substances. This means you can sleep soundly, snuggled in your machine washable duvet, safe in the knowledge that there are no nasties next to your skin.

Washable Bedding: How Often Should You Clean It?

The answer is you’ll hardly need to wash it at all. There’s no health benefit to washing it – but you can do so to clean up the cotton outers or for cosmetic reasons. Wool is naturally hygienic and self-cleaning – it doesn’t need to be washed. The wool fibres absorb moisture and stay dry, meaning that they’re not a breeding ground for fungus, mould or bacteria, unlike synthetic bedding or feather/down. So, while it may go against everything you thought you knew, our washable bedding is truly easy care and is much happier simply being hung on the washing line to air.

How To Wash Our Machine Washable Bedding bundles

If you do choose to put your washable wool duvet through the machine, just make sure you follow these simple tips:

  • Choose the wool cycle on your washing machine.
  • Use specific wool detergent
  • Don’t tumble dry your bedding – simply leave it to air dry naturally
  • If you choose to take your machine washable duvet to the laundrette, be mindful that there is no symbol for ‘wool wash only’. We like to write it on the label to make sure – you can’t be too careful.

Now that’s easy care washable wool bedding by anyone’s standards!

Trace Your Washable Wool Bedding Right Back To The Farm…

And if that wasn’t enough, our machine washable wool bedding is traceable, too. But what does this mean for you? With traceability, you get a better understanding of where your sleep comes from with wool that can be traced right back to the farm – because your sleep environment deserves a second thought. The movement of materials is recorded from sheep to sleep, promoting animal welfare, providing sourcing integrity and offering complete transparency on the origins of your bedding.
