When it comes to bedding, we know that comfort and cleanliness are key. While wool bedding has long been praised for its natural temperature control, hypoallergenic properties, and breathability, it has had a reputation for difficult care. Since 2008, Woolroom has been the ONLY wool bedding on the market that is truly washable.

The Process of Making Wool Machine Washable

To make wool genuinely machine washable, it must go through a special treatment to the fibers. Otherwise, while you can wash other wool bedding brands, over time, fibers will shrink, break down, and not return to form.

At Woolroom, we've worked with fiber and textile industry leaders using the latest technology and research to develop a new, innovative process that removes and adapts the outer scales on the fibers themselves.

This new way of wool fiber processing that enables wool to be machine washable does not reduce fiber quality over time. And enables the wool to keep its shape over a lifetime of washes, eliminating the risk of shrinking, misshaping, or even disintegrating. All of which happen without proper treatment during processing.

How is Woolroom's Wasahble wool bedding different from other brands?

Unlike many other brands that skip this step entirely OR substitute non-wool fibers to a blend to help the wool product return to shape post-wash, our process is done without the use of additives, synthetics, bleaches, or chemicals. Plus, our wool bedding is filled with 100% British wool, using the organic cotton quilted outer to keep filling in-place.

No plant-based binders, non-wool fibers, blends or additives are ever used.

Furthermore, Woolroom’s dedication to sustainability and eco-friendly practices means we’ve worked with leading textile researchers to make sure this fiber treatment that enables washability could be completed without the use of synthetics or chemicals. Water and wool only.

This step in our fiber processing prior to manufacturing ensures that our bedding is not only easy to care for but also maintains its quality wash after wash. Plus, adheres to our high standard for natural, non-toxic sleep.

Woolroom utilises a cutting-edge technology known as the Feltstop shrinkwash process, to change the game in the world of wool bedding to make the wool fiber truly machine washable.

This process involves treating the wool fibers with an aqueous chlorine solution to remove the scales off the wool fiber. This allows the fibers to glide over each other when washed and agitated, ensuring the bedding and wool within returns to its shape (and doesn’t felt). The result is a bedding material that maintains its softness, and breathability while being easy to clean. The above process is Oeko-Tex Class 100 certified for maximum safety.

Our organic wool is gently bathed in a big tank filled with pure water and natural minerals. Oxygen is then blown through the tank mixing the solution together allowing the fibers to absorb this solution. As a result, the fibers become bendy and springy which makes them more malleable when agitated stopping the fibers catching and contracting. Once washed, due to the new properties of the wool this prevents shrinkage and felting when machine washed.
