Woolroom washable wool bedding offers a unique combination of comfort, sustainability, and convenience, making it easy to care for and maintain. Unlike traditional wool bedding, which typically requires dry cleaning or special washing instructions, Woolroom bedding can be washed at home in a regular washing machine. Making it a great option for those wanting to enjoy the benefits of wool bedding without the hassle of special care restrictions.

Here's a quick and easy guide to washing Woolroom's washable wool bedding:

feature-item-1

Check the care label: Before machine washing your Woolroom bedding check the care label for any specific instructions and the weight of the product is not over your machine's capacity.

feature-item-2

Pre-treat stains: If there are any stains on your wool bedding, pre-treat them with a stain remover or a mixture of water and mild detergent. Allow the pre-treatment to sit for a few minutes before washing.

feature-item-3

Select the wool wash setting to wool or delicate setting and adjust the temperature to 30-40 degrees if this does not happen automatically.

The spin cycle should be on the slowest setting and use a gentle enzyme-free detergent (you can get specific wool detergents or own Wool Wash).

feature-item-4

Avoid using fabric softeners: Fabric softeners can damage the materials in your wool bedding, so it is best to avoid using them.

feature-item-5

Air dry: Once the wash cycle is complete, remove your wool bedding and air dry. Avoid using a dryer, as the heat can damage the materials and alter the shape of the products.

How is Woolrooms wool machine washable?

Woolroom Deluxe and Organic washable wool bedding collections go through a special "Superwash" process. During the Superwash process, our Deluxe Washable collection is treated with an aqueous chlorine solution and the Organic Collection uses a recently launched GOTS certified mineral solution to remove the tiny scales on the surface of the wool fiber that normally cause it to felt and shrink. Once the process is complete the trace of the solution is less than you find in drinking water, ensuring you a clean and chemical free sleep environment.

The benefits of Superwash for wool are more than just making the wool washable.

  1. Softness: Superwash wool often feels softer and smoother than untreated wool because the process removes the tiny scales on the surface of the fiber that can cause itching and irritation.
  2. Durability: Superwash wool is less prone to pilling, fading, and shrinking than untreated wool, making it more durable.
  3. Eco friendly: Superwash wool biodegrades three times faster than untreated wool.

So why does non-washable wool shrink?

Heat, water, and agitation during the washing process can cause the keratin proteins in wool to change and where the scales on the fibers will interlock and bind closer together and this leads to felting, and shrinking of the wool. This is why a cool water, gentle wool wash cycle or hand wash, using a wool friendly detergent which is enzyme free is recommended to avoid excessive agitation of the wool fibers. Excessive agitation can also be caused by setting the washing machine spin too higher speed or using too vigorous a wash . It the friction created between the wool fibers as the drum rotates, that causes the wool's fibers to rub against each other and become entangled.

Always read the label

If a wool product has not gone through a Superwash or our new Organic process then it simply cannot be machine washed. No ifs or buts. To avoid your product shrinking always read the label and follow the care instructions provided with your individual product or ask the manufacturer if the wool has been through the Superwash process.
