At Woolroom, we believe sleep should be as natural as it is restorative. That’s why we’ve taken our Artisan Collection to the next level - making it even more natural, sustainable, and luxurious. Every mattress in this range is a true work of craftsmanship, created by skilled artisans using traditional techniques that have stood the test of time.

From the Standen to the Holcombe, each mattress is handcrafted using the finest natural materials, carefully selected for their breathability, comfort, and sustainability. But what goes into making an Artisan mattress? Let’s take a closer look at the meticulous process behind every single one.

Natural & Sustainable Support – Calico Centre-Tied Springs

At the heart of every Artisan mattress is a layer of calico-encased, centre-tied springs, hand-nested by expert craftspeople. Unlike standard mattress springs, these glue-free springs move independently, contouring to your body for tailored support. This honeycomb structure, tied with natural linen thread, ensures breathability, flexibility, and long-lasting comfort. And because they’re glue-free, they’re fully recyclable at the end of their lifespan.

Hand-Teased Natural Fillings for Luxurious Loft

Our new Artisan range is filled with only the finest, natural and traceable British wool, chosen for its temperature-regulating and hypoallergenic properties. In our Lindisfarne and Holcombe models, we take this a step further with hand-teased fillings. This traditional technique evenly distributes natural fibres like horsehair and mohair, creating better airflow and long-lasting loft for a more comfortable night’s sleep.

Hand Side-Stitching for Strength & Durability

To reinforce the mattress edges and maximise the sleeping surface, our artisans use the time-honoured skill of hand side-stitching. This intricate process secures the sides of the mattress, ensuring edge-to-edge support and reducing motion transfer. Unlike machine-stitched alternatives, hand side-stitching gives each mattress greater durability and resilience, making it a true mark of luxury craftsmanship.

Expert Hand Tufting for Long-Lasting Comfort

To keep the natural fillings securely in place, each mattress is hand-tufted—a meticulous process that prevents shifting or sagging over time. This ensures that the mattress retains its shape, support, and comfort for years to come. It also helps distribute weight evenly across the mattress, reducing pressure points for a more restful sleep.

The Finishing Touch – Hand Tape-Edging & Chemical-Free Ticking

Every Artisan mattress is finished with hand tape-edging, securing the borders for a strong, durable edge. This step also enhances the overall appearance, giving each mattress a sleek, refined look.

The outer fabric, or ticking, is crafted from a blend of Merino wool and natural Viscose (made from wood pulp). This chemical-free ticking is naturally fire-retardant, meeting British flammability standards (BS 7177:2008+A1:2011) without the need for synthetic flame retardants. It’s breathable, soft, and kind to both you and the planet.

Embroidered Labels – A Signature of True Craftsmanship

Our mattresses are hand-finished down to the finest detail—including the embroidered labels and logos sewn into the handles. With over 10,000 stitches per label, this not only adds an elegant touch but also serves as a mark of quality and authenticity.

The Result? A Mattress That’s More Natural, More Comfortable, and Made to Last

Every mattress in the Artisan Collection takes over a full day to craft, with expert hands shaping every detail. The result is a mattress that’s not only built to last but is also free from synthetics, fully breathable, and kinder to the environment.

When you choose an Artisan mattress, you’re choosing traditional craftsmanship, ethical sourcing, and superior comfort—so you can sleep the way nature intended.
